4 Places Engineers Should Network
Being excellent technically will only get engineers so far in their professional lives. Engineers must be networking to grow their names (brands) and reputation (influence). However many times engineers will go to work, do an excellent job and then go home. They spend very little time networking.
Why you may ask does this matter? As you transition from engineer to entrepreneur or engipreneur, people need to know you. People buy from people they know, like and trust.
Let’s take a look at places for engineers to network.
- Internal to your employer – join 1-2 internal employee groups. Engineers must participate in holiday events even if for a short time. These events are when upper management and decision makers are easily accessible. Engineers should talk to everyone even if it is good morning, Merry Christmas or hi. Having an elevator pitch is crucial at this time. It can be difficult to gain access to decision makers in large international companies.
- Internal to clients – attend client meetings in person. When the opportunity arises for in person meetings, these are critical times for engineers to attend meetings. Be early to the meeting and personally introduce yourself to client representatives. Inform all attendees the role you take and lastly let the client know you are available to help them any way possible. Definitely handout your business card with handwritten note on the back.
- Professional organizations – don’t just join professional organizations but be an active member. Actively participate in planning and executing Engineers Week and other events. Its a good idea to become an officer or committee chair to gain visibility. But remember you must do the work and gain a great reputation for being a leader in these roles.
- Community/Non-Profit Organizations – PTA, chamber of commerce, Mentor, Toastmasters, etc. These organizations can draw decision makers in your local market. Getting know as the go to engineer in these circles gives you great visibility. If engineers take leadership roles they must be ready to lead. If taking a supporting role be ready to follow. No matter the role, engineers need to be known as the go to engineer.
Engineers should definitely look at joining and actively participating in various organizations. Growing your name or brand is critical to growing a business. Don’t be shy and hide. It is nearly impossible to build a profitable business. Gaining visibility before leaving corporate is an important step for engipreneurs.
